Skills Assessments on Navigate (Training Session)

Created by Chris Rowe, Modified on Fri, 12 Jun at 1:07 PM by Chris Rowe

This recorded training session walks through how the Skills Assessment works on Navigate, from how students take and review their assessment to how staff view results for individuals and whole cohorts..

What this session covers

  • What the Skills Assessment is and how it helps students understand their employability skills starting points.
  • How students start and complete the assessment in the My Skills module.
  • How students view their results and the distance travelled across multiple assessments.
  • How students build a skills focus (Skills I'm Developing) list and attach skills to timeline activities.
  • How staff view an individual student's results via Quick Links.
  • How staff use the Reports module to see starting point, distance travelled and assessment completion for a cohort.

Take a Skills Assessment (student site)

  1. Log in using the Login using Microsoft or Login using Google button, depending on your college.
  2. Go to the My Skills module on the student site.
  3. At the top of the screen, start a skill assessment and set the date you'd like the assessment completed by.
  4. Work through the 35 real-world scenario questions, answering as honestly as possible so results are accurate.
  5. Leave and return as often as needed; Navigate remembers where you got to.

View results and build a skills focus list (student site)

  1. Once the assessment is complete, view your results, which are split across three themes: My Wellbeing, My Relationships and My Future.
  2. Identify the skills you score lower on and want to focus on for the year.
  3. Click the link to attach those skills to your Skills I'm Developing list.
  4. When adding activities to your timeline, attach the skills you're developing so the evidence count against each chosen skill increases.
  5. After taking more than one assessment, view the second set of results to see the overall trend (distance travelled) in your skills development.

View an individual student's results (staff site)

  1. On the staff site, go to Quick Links at the top of the screen.
  2. Search for a student by name or by number to open their student record.
  3. On the one-page student record, view their skill assessment results, including both the individual assessment and the distance travelled.

View cohort results (staff site)

  1. Open the Reports module on the left and select the Student Engagement report.
  2. Use the Starting Point tab to see the average score across your cohort; filter by academic year, department, course or the whole college.
  3. Use the Distance Travelled tab to see how skills have increased or decreased over time.
  4. Use the Assessment Completion tab to see which students have or have not taken an assessment; click the Assessments Taken column header to sort completed assessments to the top.
